Steps to Troubleshoot a Faulty Internet Connection

Not getting connected to the internet can be quite disappointing but then, there are always ways to troubleshoot the problem. In fact, with this guide, one can easily find out where the problem lies and take steps accordingly for its rectification. Surely many issues can cause the internet, but then most of them have been covered here. Therefore, we look at them one by one.

  • Reset the router – This is one of the most common troubleshooting tips but then it also works at most of the times, and that is why it is so common! Resetting the router using the Reset button can clear out any temporary bugs or other issues. Alternatively, the hardware can also be unplugged and replugged. Before restarting the device, wait at least for a minute, and that can be enough to solve the problem.
  • Try testing many devices – If router rebooting doesn’t solve the purpose, the next step is to find out whether the problem is within or outside the house. A smart way of doing this is to connect a mobile phone, tablet or any other computer to the router so that they are online. One can plug a laptop using an Ethernet cable. If none of the devices are online, then there can be an issue with the Internet Service Provider (ISP). Make a call or find out from their feeds if something is being reported and when are they going to fix the problem.
  • Troubleshooting WiFi problems – If the internet was working and has gone down recently, it is a good idea to check the router settings or modify the network password or any other changes that may have been made. Installing a wireless device close to the router may also lead to signal interference. Heavy bandwidth usage by a specific device may also slow down a connection, and one can determine it using a speed test.

All these tests can be carried out one after the other if one faces a faulty internet connection and more often than not, it can be enough to diagnose the problem.
